Thank you so much for your interest in the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ School of Theatre and Dance.  This page was assembled to break down the multi-step process of applying to and auditioning for our BFA performance programs.  There is a lot of information to consume.  We ask that you read through this page carefully to become acquainted with all the steps leading up to the audition.  Should you have questions, there are links throughout the page that will enable you to contact our Audition/Interview Coordinator.

Design & Production and Stage Management Interview Information and Requirements 

�¼������ϲʹٷ���վ does not require a pre-screen for students interviewing for our BFA programs in Design & Production and Stage Management.  For specific information on preparing for an interview for these BFA programs, please click the above "Interview Requirements " tab for more information.

Acting and Musical Theatre Audition Information and Requirements 

�¼������ϲʹٷ���վ holds auditions by invitation only.  Auditions are granted through a pre-screen process on . For specific information on pre-screen submissions and audition requirements for the BFA in Acting or Musical Theatre, please click the above "Audition Requirements" tab for more information.   

Whenever possible, it is always the preference of our audition team to see auditions in person.  In-person auditions allow them to get a sense of an applicant's energy and personality, provides opportunities for interaction (including asking for adjustments on audition material if necessary), and offers the same conditions to all applicants by removing technical issues found in virtual auditions such as sound and video quality, lighting, internet speeds, software, editing, etc. from the final audition experience.     

A typical on-campus audition day will begin with check-in at 8 am and conclude by 3:30 pm (the end time may vary based on the number of auditions scheduled that day).   

Campus audition days are designed to give applicants an immersive experience into the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ campus culture and the opportunity to interview us to see if what �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ has to offer aligns with their academic and career goals.   

They include: 

• A welcome session.  
• An information/Q&A session for parents with the Director of the School of Theatre and Dance or the Dean of the College of Fine Arts.  
• A tour of the Center for Theatre and Dance 
• Campus and Theatre and Dance performance space tours. 
• Lunch with current students 
• Ample opportunities to have questions answered.

Prescreens are viewed in the order in which they are received.  For each audition date, there is a prescreen deadline.  These deadlines are set to ensure our faculty has time to view submissions and respond to applicants with enough time to make travel plans.  Prescreen deadlines are soft, meaning, we will accept submissions after the prescreen deadline.  With late submissions, however, we cannot guarantee a decision will be rendered in time for the audition date with which the deadline is associated.

Live Virtual Auditions  

For those who are unable to make the journey to our campus, the School of Theatre and Dance will be offering in-person auditions in Chicago (see our Chicago Auditions page for details).  In addition, we will offer 2 Live Virtual audition dates through the GetAcceptd Audition Room format (see below for details).  

Applicants who have passed the pre-screen process may choose the method that best suits their needs and schedule their audition accordingly. All auditions, regardless of their location or delivery, are given the same level of attention and consideration. 

LiveVirtual auditions are conducted online via the GetAcceptd AuditionRoom.  The AuditionRoom is an interface with Zoom that allows applicants to audition for a live panel from any room that has an internet connection.  This option is available for those who have medical concerns, limited travel resources, or who live outside of the contiguous United States.  

LiveVirtual auditions will follow the guidelines listed below with the exception of dance.  Dance skills for those participating in the LiveVirtual auditions will be evaluated based on your pre-screen dance submission.  

Musical theatre applicants may choose to perform their songs to live or recorded accompaniment.  We highly recommend doing a test run with a friend or family member to make sure both the voice and the accompaniment can be heard and are well balanced, and that the applicant is adequately lit. You may use the same material for your audition that you used for the pre-screen, however, please note the difference between the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ auditions and the Common Musical Theatre Pre-Screen requirements including the allotted time per piece, etc. (see information below). 
Additional Information

It is always our preference to see auditions in-person. They allow us opportunities to interact with applicants and get to know them a bit.  They also allow applicants an opportunity to interact with our students, faculty, campus community, and our facilities.  We do, however, understand and respect those with the need to audition virtually. Therefore, regardless of the method of delivery, all auditions are given the same level of consideration. 
 

Getting Started

The application process for international students is quite different than for US citizens.  Detailed information on how to apply to �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ may be found on our .  Entrance to our BFA performance programs requires an audition.  Once your application has been received, our Office of �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ will send an access code enabling you to submit your digital audition materials to GetAcceptd.com.

Audition Requirements 

For those wishing to audition for the BFA in Musical Theatre or the BFA in Acting, please follow the guidelines on the above "Audition Requirements" tab and submit your materials to  (There is a $30 fee to submit your audition materials).  If you wish to be considered for both our Musical Theatre and Acting programs, please follow the guidelines for the Musical Theatre audition and include a 2nd contemporary monologue contrasting in style to the 1st (if your first monologue is comedic, your 2nd should be dramatic, and vice versa).  Please be sure to mark the appropriate box to indicate that you are an international student on the GetAcceptd questionnaire.    

BFA Interviews

If you are interested in being considered for the BFA in Stage Management or the BFA in Design and Production, you will be contacted after your application has been received to schedule an interview with our faculty.  Please see our "Interview Requirements" tab for specific information on what you will need to prepare for your interview.  

BA in Theatre and Performance Studies

Students seeking a BA in Theatre and Performance Studies need only apply and be accepted by the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ Office of �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ. No additional steps are required for entrance to our BA program.

The Pre-screen submission deadline for our Chicago Auditions is November 30, 2024.  

Auditions will be held for the following programs:

• Acting
• Musical Theatre

Students wishing to attend our Chicago auditions/interviews must apply to and be accepted by the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ University Office of �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ prior to scheduling an appointment.

Our Chicago auditions function a bit differently.  Applicants will select either a morning or afternoon audition session.  Each session will run approximately 4 hours and will accommodate 25 applicants.  Each session will also include a brief welcome and information session followed by the auditions which will consist of: 

• Musical Theatre
  • Warm-up 
  • Perform songs and monologue
  • Learn and perform dance combination
• Acting
  • Warm-up (on your own or with our alumni assistants)
  • Perform monologues

Those auditioning for our BFA Acting program will be filtered in with the Musical Theatre auditions.  Once you have performed your monologues, you will be free to leave. 

Those auditioning for our Musical Theatre program should expect to stay for the entire 4-hour session.  You will first perform your songs and monologues, then learn and perform the dance combination. Dance, yoga, or other form fitting workout clothes are recommended for the dance call. Ballet shoes are preferred but jazz shoes, socks or bare feet are also acceptable. 

Those auditioning for both Musical Theatre and Acting should follow the guidelines for the Musical Theatre audition.  However, we do ask that you have a 2nd contrasting contemporary monologue prepared in the event our audition team needs to see more from you. 

Our Chicago area alumni serve as assistants and monitors for these auditions. These graduatess are an excellent resource and are there to help answer questions for applicants and their parents/guardians throughout each of these audition sessions. 

Performance Degree Pre-Screen Requirements 

Auditions for the School of Theatre and Dance are by invitation.  Invitations are extended through a pre-screen process conducted on

Scheduling Your Audition

Upon evaluation of your pre-screen materials, invitations to attend our Chicago auditions will be extended through GetAcceptd.  Applicants will be directed to the GetAcceptd scheduling portal to select a session time.

Helpful Information

• All students applying for our BFA Design & Production or BFA Stage Management programs must interview for consideration. Upon acceptance by the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ Office of �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ, you will be prompted to contact the appropriate person toschedule your interview. To ensure a strong and successful interview, please carefully read the guidelines below and bring the appropriate materials for review.   

  BFA - Design & Production 

  For your interview, you should prepare a portfolio and be able to discuss your experiences, skills and goals. Your portfolio should highlight your strengths as a designer and/or technician. Suggestions include:

  • Photographs of past productions.  Completed projects, as well as process shots, allow the interviewers to get a sense of your past experience, the quality of work you do, etc.

  • Design or paperwork from productions. If you designed the costumes, the renderings should be included, along with the photo of the completed garment. If you were the head electrician, bring paperwork such as hang sheets.

  • 3-D examples of work are fine (as long as they are a reasonable size). A model of the set, a costume or small prop is a fine example of your skills.

  • Artwork. Sketches, drawings, paintings and photography are great examples. While they may not be theatre work, they do allow the interviewers to assess your artistic abilities and your “eye”.

  • Include a resumé focused on your theatre experience, employment history, computer and artistic skills.

  BFA - Stage Management

  For your interview, you should be prepared to discuss your experiences, skills and goals.

  • Portfolio Materials.  We ask that you share your digital portfolio materials, portfolio prompt script or representative paperwork samples, in advance of your interview.  

  • Include a resumé focused on your theatre experience, employment history, and related skills that serve your work as a stage manager.

  For all Prospective Students

  Applicants will have the option to interview digitally or on campus.  Should you choose to interview on campus, a typical interview day will include the following components:

  • Check-In – We recommend checking in at the School of Theatre and Dance Administrative Office located adjacent to the 2nd floor lobby of the Center for Theatre and Dance about 10 minutes prior to your interview.   

  • Attend a Class – Sit in on a class to get a sense of the teaching style, subject matter, and the interaction between students and faculty.    

  • Interview - After check-in, you will be escorted to your interview. The faculty may let you present your whole portfolio or prompt book, or they may stop your presentation to ask questions about your ideas, methods, etc. Be prepared to explain your choices. They will ask questions about time management, working with groups, and supervision of others. Generally, they want to get a sense of you as a person, your strengths, and your goals.

  • Exit Meeting - Following your interview you will have a short break while the faculty discuss your presentation and conversation.  There will be another short meeting with the faculty to discuss the results of your interview and to answer any questions you and your parents/guardians may have about the program into which you have been placed. 

  • Tour our Facilities - During your visit you will have an opportunity to tour our facilities and see the spaces in which you would be working should you choose to attend �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ. 

  • Optional - We would be happy to connect you with some current students who can share insight on what it's like to be a �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ student.  They can answer many questions about student life, living in the residence halls, and campus experiences, clubs, organizations, Greek life, activities, etc...

  Your parents/guardians are encouraged to come to campus with you. While they will not be able to attend your interview, they will be invited to participate in your exit meeting where they will have the opportunity to have any questions they may have answered. The order in which your campus visit activities take place may vary from what is listed above.  

  To make the most of your campus visit, we also recommend making appointments with the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ, Student Financial Services, and the Campus Life offices so you can have any non-theatre related questions answered.

  The Details

  To begin the audition process, all applicants must first apply to and be accepted by the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ Office of �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ.  Applications may be submitted either by using the Common App, or by submitting the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ online application found on our  Page.  Please be aware that the Common App can sometimes take up to a week or more to reach our admissions staff.  The �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ online application is received by our admissions staff the moment it has been submitted.  With either method, there is no fee to apply to �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ. 

   

  Pre-Screen Submissions

  Auditions for our BFA Acting and Musical Theatre programs are by invitation only.  Invitations are extended through a pre-screen process hosted through  An access code is required to submit pre-screen materials. Upon admission to �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ, you will receive a welcome letter from the School of Theatre and Dance containing your personal access code that will enable you to upload your pre-screen materials to GetAcceptd. 

  Illinois residents are exempt from our Pre-Screen requirement.  Upon acceptance by the office of admission, those who reside in the state of Illinois may contact our Audition Coordinator to schedule an audition. 

  Scheduling An Audition

  Invitations to audition will be sent through the GetAcceptd messaging app and will direct you to visit the GetAcceptd scheduling portal where you can select an audition date.  Please see the "Audition Requirements" tab for more information.

   

  The Audition Process

  In-Person Auditions

  �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ audition days have been designed to give you and your parents/guardians a comprehensive feel for the School of Theatre and Dance, who we are, what we do, and how we function.  It’s an opportunity to tour our campus and facilities, to learn about our signature programs (those things that set �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ apart from other programs), enjoy a complimentary lunch in our campus dining hall, and to interact with our students and the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ community. Audition days begin with a morning check-in at the Center for Theatre and Dance and a brief welcome and informational session. 

  Auditions will consist of:

  • Musical Theatre
    • Warm-up 
    • Perform songs and monologue
    • Learn and perform dance combination
  • Acting
    • Warm-up
    • Perform monologues

  All applicants will receive a detailed itinerary for the day which typically begins with check-in at 8am and concludes mid-afternoon.  Additional options such as attending performances or meeting with representatives from the Office of �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ or Student Financial Services may also be arranged depending on availability. Questions regarding any of these options may be sent to our Audition/Interview Coordinator prior to your scheduled audition day.   
   

  Off Campus Auditions

  Each audition cycle we attend a number of off-campus auditions depending on faculty availability.  Applicants who receive “callbacks” at these events are invited to skip our pre-screen process and may schedule an audition with us upon acceptance to �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ University. “Callbacks” are typically extended through an email from our audition panel.  Auditions we often attend include the following:

  Applicants who have attended one or more week-long Broadway Dreams intensives in the last 4 years may also skip the pre-screen process and schedule an audition upon acceptance by the Office of �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ. 

  The Musical Theatre Common Pre-Screen

  �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ is a participant in the  program.  The Common Pre-Screen is a set of audition criteria agreed upon by a collective of college and university programs that allows applicants to record a single package of pre-screen materials for submission to any of the participating schools.  At present, there is no Common Pre-Screen agreement with colleges and universities for students seeking a BFA in Acting.  Those auditioning for our BFA Acting program should follow the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ audition requirements listed below.  Musical Theatre applicants are welcome to follow either the Common Pre-Screen requirements or the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ audition requirements when submitting pre-screen materials (see how they differ by scrolling down to the FAQ section).  All those who advance past the pre-screen must observe the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ audition requirements detailed below.    

  Preparing Your Audition 

  Please use the following guidelines when preparing your in-person and/or LiveVirtual audition.  

  BFA in Musical Theatre   

  Monologues:  

  • Please prepare a contemporary monologue (written after 1990) not to exceed 45 seconds in length 
  • Your monologue should feature a character close to your own age and must be from a published play (films, musicals, self-written, stand-alone pieces and/or speech team monologues are not appropriate)
  • Monologues should be performed in your natural speaking voice (no dialects) and should be action driven (speaking to and/or trying to affect or get something from your “other”)  
  • Storytelling monologues, pieces that detail a previous event, telephone calls, or pieces delivered to a “crowd” or “audience” by characters such as tour guides, politicians, or actors, are not appropriate.  
  • Please do not use material by Christopher Durang, Neil Simon, or pieces commonly found in published monologue books.  

  In the event the audition panel should need to see additional material, applicants should be prepared with a 2nd contrasting contemporary monologue, 45 seconds in length.  

  Songs:  

  • Please prepare two contrasting songs that show your vocal range (one up-tempo and one ballad) from published Broadway literature. 
  • One song should be from classic (Golden Age) Broadway repertoire (written before 1970) and one should be from contemporary Broadway repertoire (written after 1970). Trunk songs by established writers are also acceptable (see FAQs)
  • Selections should not exceed 60 seconds in length (approximately 16-32 bars)
  • While we ask for a 60 second audition "cut," please be prepared to sing your entire song(s) should our audition panel need to hear more from you 
  • Bring sheet music in the proper key - an accompanist will be provided for you 
  • Approximately a week before your audition, you will be asked to email digital copies of your songs to our accompanist with your cuts clearly marked. 
    • While we ask for your music in advance so our accompanist can become familiar with it, you should still bring your original copies in a proper binder to your in-person audition.
  • Recorded accompaniment or a-cappella singing are not appropriate for this audition
  • We do not recommend using a bell-tone intro to your song.  Please use a traditional 2 or 4 bar "intro" 

  Please do not select material by Jason Robert Brown, Adam Guettel, or Stephen Sondheim (Links to The Sondheim Rule Document).

  Dance:  

  • Applicants will learn and perform a short ballet combination for members of the performance faculty.  Please dress appropriately - leotard and tights, t-shirt and yoga pants, slim fitting sweatpants or shorts are all acceptable.  If you do not have dance shoes you may dance in socks or bare feet.  Street shoes will not be permitted in the dance studios.  
  • Please note that while our dance audition combination is designed to allow our faculty to assess your level of ability and place you accordingly into our dance curriculum, dancers/movers of ALL levels are welcome including those who have never had a formal dance class. 

  BFA in Acting

  Monologues:  

  • Please prepare two contemporary monologues (written after 1990) contrasting in style (one comedic, one dramatic) not to exceed 45 seconds in length each

  FAQs

  When can I apply to �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ? 
  Applications are currently being accepted. We accept the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ online application and the Common App.  Please note, the Common App often takes a week or more to reach our �¼������ϲʹٷ���վs office.  Applying directly to �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ makes your application available to our admissions staff as soon as it has been submitted.  

  Is there a fee to apply to �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ?

  No, �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ does not assess an application fee. 

  Is there a fee to audition?

  No.  However, there is a fee to submit a pre-screen to GetAcceptd. See below for details.

   

  How long do applications take to process? 
  The review of applicants begins in mid-September.  Once applications and all supporting materials (transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc..) have been received by our Office of �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ, the review process takes approximately 2-3 weeks.  Please be aware that transcripts may take several weeks to reach us, so request them early.  

  When will I be notified if I have been accepted to �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ? 
  It takes approximately a week after an application decision has been made for the admission packet to be assembled and mailed.  

  Does �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ Offer Schoalrships?

  Yes.  All students who are accepted to a BFA program receive a College of Fine Arts Scholarship.  These scholarships range from $1000 - $5000 and renew annually as long as you remain enrolled in the College of Fine Arts.  The CFA Scholarships will stack with your Academic Merit Scholarship awarded to you upon admission. 

  What is GetAcceptd.com?  
  GetAcceptd is an online platform that helps arts-based organizations manage auditions, interviews, portfolio reviews etc... Applicants for �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ BFA performance programs will submit their pre-screen materials to GetAcceptd.  

  What is a Pre-Screen and why is it necessary? 
  A pre-screen is a digital audition.  Because we often have more applicants than audition appointments, it is not possible to accommodate everyone at a live audition.  The pre-screen process offers an opportunity for all applicants to be seen and allows us to offer audition invitations to those we believe may have potential to be successful in our program.  

  Can I audition for both Musical Theatre and Acting? 

  Yes.  Those interested in being considered for both programs should upload a 2nd contemporary monologue with their pre-screen materials.  Also be sure to answer the question on the application regarding auditioning for both programs. 

   

  Do I need to submit separate pre-screens for each degree program?

  No.  A single submission will be sufficient as long as you have included a 2nd contemporary monologue for consideration for the BFA Acting program. 

   

  Is there a fee to submit a pre-screen to GetAcceptd?

  Yes.  GetAcceptd charges a $35 fee to submit pre-screen materials.  Fee waivers are available for those who qualify.  Contact GetAcceptd directly for information. 

  What is the deadline for pre-screen submissions?    
  Each audition date has a specific pre-screen submission deadline.  Please refer to our "Audition Requirements" tab for specific deadlines.  This needs to link to the General Info page. 

  What is a LiveVirtual Audition? 

  The LiveVirtual audition allows an applicant to audition from any room with an internet connection.  Using a platform created by GetAcceptd called AuditionRoom, applicants who are unable to attend one of our in-person auditions may perform an audition in real time for our audition panel using a digital format (Zoom). 

  Is there a fee for a LiveVirtual audition using the GetAcceptd AuditionRoom?

  No.  The fee paid to upload your digital pre-screen materials includes access to the AuditionRoom. 

  If I received a “callback” that makes me eligible to skip the pre-screen, can I still do a LiveVirtual audition via the GetAcceptd AuditionRoom? 

  Yes.  However, there is a fee involved. 

  • Access to the AuditionRoom requires all participants to have completed the full registration process through �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ’s GetAcceptd landing page.  This process includes uploading all materials associated with a pre-screen - headshot, resumé, and video submissions. This submission will require the $35 upload fee.
  • These pre-screen materials will only be viewed by the �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ audition panel in the event they need to see more from the applicant after the LiveVirtual audition.
  • Fee waivers are available to those who qualify.  Contact GetAcceptd directly for information. 

   

  How are the Musical Theatre Common Pre-Screen and �¼������ϲʹٷ���վ audition requirements different?

  Can I use the same material for my audition that I used for my pre-screen? 
  You may use the same material as your pre-screens as long as you trim your pieces to align with the requirements for our live auditions.  Those who go over the time limit will be cut off by our audition timer.  In addition, monologues for our in-person or LiveVirtual auditions must be contemporary (written after 1990).  So, if you would like to use the same material for your pre-screen and in-person/LiveVirtual auditions, be sure to select monologues that suit the needs of both. 

  Why do audition pieces for on-campus and Chicago auditions need to be shorter than the Common Musical Theatre Pre-Screen requirements?   
  To allow more students to audition with the limited number of audition slots we have available, we require shorter cuts of audition pieces.  Rest assured that the length of these cuts still offers our audition panel ample time to carefully evaluate each applicant.  

  When will I learn the results of my audition? 
  You should receive a letter with your audition results approximately 2 weeks after your audition.  If after 2 weeks you have not received a decision letter, please contact our Audition/Interview Coordinator so we can check on the status of your letter.  

  What is a Trunk Song?

  Trunk songs are pieces that were either cut from or never made it into Broadway shows.  They are stand-alone pieces written by composers for any number of reasons. Most composers have quite a few songs tucked away in a “trunk” that were never published or that were published as “one-offs.”
